Turbine Art Fair 2021: Thokozani Mthiyane | Tanya Sternberg

29 September - 3 October 2021

NOTES FROM THE MASQUERADE

Every year Candice Berman Gallery introduces 'new' or previously undiscovered South African artistic talent into the art-world blood stream via the Turbine Art Fair platform. This year our New Blood exhibition will display original works by Thokozani Mthiyane and Tanya Sternberg.

Mthiyane’s works are more about personal expression and the channelling of innate creative forces than they are stylistically reflexive engagements with the discourse of art history. Included here are works from his series Notes from the Masquerades, an exhibition that will be pursued further in 2022 with Candice Berman Gallery. The allusions to the mask; the circle or mandala indicates the ritualistic nature of being as a spiritual phenomenon- the concept is informed by the religiosity of my spiritual consciousness, the rituals of being and becoming.

Tanya Sternberg’s intricate landscapes of architectural planes are comprised of geometric shapes, building layers upon each other until there is a dense overlapping of structures. Obvious reflections of our cities, it’s population and inner chaotic state. The works shown here are snippets form her Chasing Space Solo Exhibition showing with Candice Berman Gallery in October 2021.
